    Applicants who wish to study in the fields represented by strong research groups at Western Australian universities are particularly encouraged to apply. As measured by the 2012 Australian Government research ranking exercise, Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA), these teams are working in:

    Forrest Research Foundation Scholarships are available for outstanding international and Australian students who wish to study towards a PhD at one of the following Western Australian universities:

    • Curtin University
    • Edith Cowan University
    • Murdoch University
    • Notre Dame University (Fremantle Campus)
    • The University of Western Australia

    Applicants must have applied for enrolment in a PhD at one of the universities listed above but not have already enrolled or previously undertaken research towards a PhD or other research doctorate.

    An applicant must have a bachelor’s degree of First Class Honours standard or equivalent.

    Applicants must be willing to reside with other Forrest Scholars (exemptions may be considered in special circumstances in accordance with the Scholarship Conditions).

    Scholars will be selected from international and Australian applicants who demonstrate an outstanding academic ability to undertake research work with the potential to change the world we live in.

    Applications will be assessed on the basis of each applicant's:

    • academic achievements (with a bachelor's degree of First Class Honours standard or equivalent)
    • exceptional ability, resourcefulness and originality
    • potential to make a positive difference to the world
    • demonstration of how the award would help build world-class innovation and research capacity in Western Australia

    The selection of successful applicants is undertaken by the Selection Committee, which comprises eminent people from the research and broader communities.

    Benefits

    1. All Forrest Scholars will receive a scholarship package which includes:

    • a Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend or equivalent university postgraduate research scholarship stipend valued at $26,682 per annum in 2017 and indexed annually; and
    • An accommodation allowance valued at $20,011 in 2017 and subject to annual indexation. The allowance is available to contribute to accommodation costs at Forrest Hall or other residential college accommodation approved by the Foundation (see Clause 12); and
    • a relocation and research operating/research travel allowance of up to $13,000. The relocation allowance covers airfares and relocation expenses for students to relocate to Perth to take up the scholarship. The operating/research travel allowance is available for approved research-related expenses, overseas research, and conference travel.

    2. International Forrest Scholars will also receive an International Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset Scholarship or equivalent university international fee scholarship which covers the full international tuition fees and overseas student health cover.

    3. Domestic Forrest Scholars will receive a Domestic Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset Scholarship which provides exemption from the requirement to pay tuition fees for the duration of the scholarship.

    Forrest Scholarships are open to international and domestic students intending on enrolling in a PhD at a Western Australian university.

    A completed application must have the following:

    • Completed Application Form
    • Curriculum vitae
    • Copies of all academic transcripts
    • Contact details for four referees (two academic and two personal)
    • Copies of birth certificate or passport
    • Proof of English language proficiency
    • Passport-sized photograph
    • Short essay of no more than 1000 words which provides an explanation of the applicant's desire to study at their nominated university, the plan of study, details of the research group, intended supervisors and future careers plans. It must also address the selection criteria regarding the applicants:
      1. academic achievements (with a bachelor's degree of First Class Honours standard or equivalent)
      2. exceptional ability, resourcefulness and originality
      3. potential to make a positive difference to the world
      4. demonstration of how the award would help build world-class innovation and research capacity in Western Australia
